This scam is becoming one of the most common scams used by scammers and very closely resembles the Romanian Laptop Scam already found on this site.

Essentially, a Western Union scam is any scam that takes place using the Western Union method of payment.

Most commonly, there is a situation where a buyer pays for something via Western Union, and then never receives what was paid for; or the buyer pays for an item via Western Union, and then receives an item of a value far lower than what was actually paid for.

or Example:

Buyer pays for a brand new laptop valued at $3000. Buyer never receives laptop.
Buyer pays for a brand new laptop valued at $3000. Buyer receives an old, used, $300 laptop.

FlipShark.com has nothing against the Western Union service, it is just not supposed to be used for online purchases from unknown sellers.
If you visit the Western Union website, it clearly states Western Union is NOT to be used for sending money to people you don't know.

The Scam Itself:

Please note this scam takes a various number of forms for a wide variety of items. Just because it does not match exactly your transaction or potential transaction, does not mean it is not the same scam. In other words, avoid any scams the resembling the following MO (situation).

Buyer finds an item at a price far lower that what would actually be paid for that item. The buyer either finds this item on an ebay auction, or on a website, or most commonly, they are contacted by another ebayer after placing a bid on similar items. In such a situation the buyer usually receives an email with the following format:
- I am a such and such (respectable ebay seller, owner of a small company, wholesaler, etc.)
- I noticed you bid on a some item on ebay (this can be anything from a laptop, to a keyboard, to a guitar, to Disney World tickets... Basically it can be anything priced over $10)
- I can sell you said item, for a price far lower than retail (or any price lower than what you would normally pay). Note: some sellers do ask the retail price for the item, so just because they are asking retail price, does not mean they are not a crook. It is just more common for them to offer a lower price, because they can attract more potential victims.
- I can only accept money via Western Union money transfer, however I can provide you with a shipment tracking number to ensure you, that I have sent your item. (This is just a way to may victims feel safe before sending their money; the tracking number is usually fake, yet it appears to be real.)
  Note: Sometimes thieves do provide real tracking numbers and may even be willing to "ship" your item before they get their money. In such scenarios the thief is likely sending an empty box, or an item worth far less than what was paid for (IE a $1.00 brass chain instead of a $1000.00 24K gold necklace).
Buyer shows interest in the item, thinks the deal is too good to pass up, and asks for more information on how to complete the transaction. The scammer knows the victim is already interested because they were already bidding on similar items on ebay.
The seller tells the buyer to send the money via Western Union, the seller then asks for the Western Union MTCN # or the money transfer number (this is basically a number that gives the thief access the money).
Once the thief has the MTCN or money transfer number, he/she can pick up the money at any Western Union worldwide and disappear. The buyer has paid, but the item that was paid for will never be sent.

In case you haven't understood the meaning behind this article, allow me to spell it out for you.

WHEN BUYING ONLINE

NEVER PAY WITH WESTERN UNION!

THAT MEANS NEVER

NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES!

Below are some key points, or highlights, I feel you should be made aware, that can be found on Western Union's own security information page. The bold blue text is my commentary. The "quoted italicized text" was copied from the Western Union website.

"There are individuals throughout the world who will attempt to use any system to receive payments in connection with fraudulent sales or solicitations."
This warning was put there due to the increase in scams being done through Western Union.

"Make sure you know to whom you are sending money" + "We caution people who use our services against sending money to people they don't know. It is the sender's responsibility to know the party to which the funds are being sent."
If you are buying on ebay or from anyone else you have never met, you do not know who you are sending money to. This is true for almost all online purchases.
In other words, if Western Union says "don't send money to people you don't know", and anyone you buy from online is a person you don't know. Then don't use Western Union to buy online.

"Western Union does not offer an escrow service or any type of "purchase protection" policy. "
Simply put, once you send your money, there is no protection on it, and no way to get it back.

"Western Union will pay the receiver whenever the receiver shows proper identification, even if the receiver does not know the answer to the test question. "
PROPER IDENTIFICATION = THE MONEY TRANSFER NUMBER
Western Union is a service used to send money from one person to another, it is commonly used when people lose their wallets and identification in other countries. In other words, if you lose your identification you cannot show a drivers license, passport, etc., to pick up funds; thus the money transfer number becomes your ID. So if you give the thief the money transfer number they can pick up the funds without ID. If ID is required they can simply use a fake ID.

What is surfjunky.com?

Simply, Surf Junky is a website which pays members to visit other web sites through their “surf bar”. The user is required to visit the page for 30 seconds before being forwarded to another paid page. Surf Junky claims they will pay between $0.45 and $0.75 cents per hour of surfing.

How is it a scam?Simply put, you are supposed to get paid to surf. Surfjunky.com however does not and will never pay you. So to reach their minimum $25 payout, you need to surf for 55.5 hours. You work for almost 56 hours and get paid nothing. If this is not a scam I don’t know what is.How do you know it is a scam? Well first off the mathematics behind the site are simply impossible. The site charges advertisers using the following pay schedule:

100,000 Visitors - $29.95 250,000 Visitors - $59.95 500,000 Visitors - $99.95
1,000,000 Visitors - $189.95

Let’s just start with the minimum amount of 100,000 visits for about $30.00. So that means an advertiser is paying approximately $0.0003 per visit... right? ($30/100 000)

Now a member of surfjunky.com gets paid $0.45 per hour of surfing. The member can surf a maximum of 120 pages per hour (Each page must be viewed for 30 seconds, no multiple windows are allowed. So that is 2 pages per minute, 60 minutes per hour, which equals 120 visits per hour MAX)

Are you still following? Good!

Now go back to our advertising rate of $0.0003 per visit. Multiply this by 120 visits. That means that for 120 visits to his/her website a webmaster is paying ONLY $0.036.

So the advertiser is paying $0.036, or just under four cents, for every 120 visitors to his/her website. However, surfjunky.com is suppose to be paying its members $0.45, or 45 cents, per 120 pages visited.

That means either, 1) surfjunky.com is the worst business in the world and is planning on taking a loss $0.414 or 1250% for every hour a visitor surfs or 2) surfjunky.com is a scam site that never intends on paying its users.

To further amplify this loss consider this. Once a user reaches the minimum $25 payout, surfjunky.com has only made $1.99 from that user (they make $0.036 per hour times 55.5 hours to reach payout of $25). So surfjunky.com is actually taking a loss of $23.01 per payout.

So with a loss of $23 per user. Multiplied by approximately 500,000 registered users at last count, surfjunky.com will be recording a loss of $11,500,000 once members reach payout.

Now I don’t want to seem to be over exaggerating because it hurts my credibility. So let’s assume only 1 in 10... no 1 in 100... no wait 1 in 1000 users actually make it to payout without cheating, getting bored and stopping, etc. The company will still be taking a loss of $15,000 each payout cycle. That is a loss of $15,000 EACH and EVERY month!

So even if surfjunky.com fully intends on paying all users, and does not want to be a scam, the fact of the matter is paying them is impossible! It just won’t happen! They will go bankrupt before 1 payout is made

One of the best ways to shut surfjunky.com down is by going directly to the domains registrar. First report them for using false contact information (Phone number 555-555-5555 is fake). Also consider reporting them for running an illegal site. You can also try and contact their ISP or web host as well and try and get them shut down as well.

Rich PTC is on our Scam List and here are our reasons:

1. Ties with a Scammer - Yes, yet again. Another Michael Pratt. Any site with his name on it, you can bet on being a scam. For more info read here.

2. No Forum - Most PTCs without forums is a big fat clue that the owner does not welcome feedback.

3. Whois Protected - Sites that hide their identity of their owner is also a red flag that the site might turn out to be a scam.

4. Fake Payment Proofs - See screen shots at the bottom of this post for more info.

5. Too good to be true - If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Here is some info from their site:

So if the advertiser is only paying the owner $3 and the owner turns around and pays $1000 to show it, where is the rest of the money going to come from when he plans to pay you ? What happens when it comes time for you to cash out? Lets math that out.

Still not enough to pay for 1000 hits. Which can only mean one thing. This site is bogus. At first you might see people get paid, but when the site grows, there is no way it can withstand those rates. The only person getting Rich is the owner, the user only gets scammed when it is all said and done.

Also, on another chat forum, a person noticed that RichPTC had his name as someone who received a payment. Guess what? He isn't even a member there! Which means the current payment proofs are fake. View the screen shots at the end of this post for more info.

We would not recommend this site to anyone. We consider Rich PTC to be a huge investment risk. Use extreme caution when dealing with these type of sites!

With the influx of legitimate money-making websites on the web came a great number of scams including the rampant introduction of pay-to-read and pay-to-click (PTR and PTC respectively) websites promising anywhere from $0.50 to $8000 for reading a single E-mail or banner ad. These
websites promise payouts from $500 to $800,000 that go directly to your PayPal or E-gold account, sometimes minus a substantial transfer fee.

People are drawn to these websites looking to get rich quick or at least gain a few extra dollars with as little effort as possible. I mean what could be easier than getting paid to read ads? The truth is that almost all of these websites, even the ones with seemingly small payouts do not deliver what they promise, nor do they have to if money doesn't trade hands but too typical end users, this doesn't make their practices ethical, excusable or forgivable.

So how can one tell if the PTR/PTC site is legit? First, do a Google search on the website in question. There are a number of websites and forums out there designed to warn users of PTR/PTC scams. If you can't find that website listed, try checking the Better Business Bureau at http://search.bbb.org/ and use their URL search option. If you still can't find any information the best way to tell whether the website is indeed a scam is to do a little math.

Let's use www.500cents-500dollars.org, one of the more popular websites as an example. They currently have 75,640 users. On the homepage you will see that 500cents-500dollars.org boasts $5 per E-mail and a $500 minimum payout for the free membership. On the homepage, click on the advertising link you will see how 500cents-500dollars.org only charges advertisers $4.00 for a $1.00 paid E-mail to all members, $6.00 for a $5.00 paid E-mail to all members and $8.00 for a $10.00 paid E-mail to all members.
